Description of village Stubben / Lauenburg

GERMAN VERSION

STUBBEN

Stubben is a village west of the city of Ratzeburg and belongs to county Herzogtum Lauenburg.
It was administrated earlier by Amt Steinhorst. The residents belonged to the parish of the Eichede church in Stormarn, however, and not the Sandesneben church, which is also in the duchy of Lauenburg but further away.

Stubben was previously named “tho den Stubben”. In Low German, a Stubben is the stump of a sawed off tree trunk. Presumably a forest was once cleared here. The area is first mentioned in a document from 1408. In this document, Stubben is sold together with other villages from the nobles Gottschalk von Wegede and Vollrath von Zülen to Duke Erich the Elder.

In 1626, Stubben consisted of 7 farms; later, additional buildings were added and in 1855, one counts 7 farms, 10 quarter-farms, 8 cottages with land, 9 cultivator's patches, and 22 cottages without land.
The area was extended to include the districts of “Radeland” and “Krüh”; in addition, there are a fish pond named “Wallteich” and a forester's house called “Stubbener Zuschlag”.
